Should I Take an Umbrella or Wear a Waterproof?

An umbrella gives quick shelter. A waterproof keeps your hands free. The weather and the journey decide which is less annoying.
Choose an umbrella when
An umbrella works well for short or moderate walks in calm weather, particularly when you want to protect smart clothes, hair or a bag without wearing a waterproof all day.
It is also easy to put away once the shower passes. For a stop-start urban journey with plenty of shelter, that convenience can be enough.
Choose a waterproof when
A waterproof is better when you need both hands, expect steady rain or will be outside long enough for rain to blow around an umbrella. It also makes more sense for cycling, running, dog walking and carrying children or several bags.
Look for a breathable layer if you will be moving quickly. Staying dry from rain is less impressive if the jacket leaves you damp from effort instead.
Wind changes the answer
Strong wind is the main argument against an umbrella. Gusts can turn it inside out, pull it sideways and leave your lower half wet while you negotiate with it.
In windy rain, a hooded waterproof is usually the calmer choice. Make sure the hood can be adjusted so it protects your face without blocking your view.
Match the choice to the activity
For commuting by train, an umbrella may suit the walk at each end. For cycling it is not an option. For a festival, football touchline or long dog walk, a waterproof leaves you free to get on with the plan.
Think about crowded pavements too. An umbrella needs space, which can be in short supply near stations and school gates.
When the forecast is uncertain
If rain is possible but not certain, pack the smaller option that still works for your journey. That may be a compact umbrella for a calm commute or a lightweight shell for an active day.
The best choice is the one you will actually carry and can use when the shower reaches you.
