How to Plan the School Run Around the Weather

The school run involves two trips, several bags and at least one person who does not care what the rain percentage means.

Drop-off and pickup are different trips

A dry walk to school does not guarantee a dry pickup. The two journeys can be hours apart, so it is worth checking them separately rather than treating the school run as one daily forecast.

If rain is due later, putting a waterproof in the bag in the morning is easier than discovering the problem at the school gate.

There is more standing around than expected

Queues, conversations and waiting for the gate to open all reduce the warmth you would get from walking. On a cold or windy day, adults and children may need a little more than the journey distance suggests.

Layers are useful because the person rushing to get everyone out of the house may feel very different from the person standing still five minutes later.

Shoes and bags matter

Wet shoes can make the rest of a school day miserable. In proper rain, sensible footwear and a coat that covers well are often more useful than relying on an umbrella.

Remember the bags too. A bag cover or a waterproof inner pouch can protect books, spare clothes and the paperwork that somehow always appears on the wettest day.
