How Wind Changes What You Should Wear

Wind can make a mild temperature feel cold, turn light rain sideways and expose every optimistic gap in an outfit.

Wind removes warmth

Moving air carries heat away from exposed skin and can make the day feel colder than the measured temperature. This is why the feels-like reading deserves attention on windy days.

Covering exposed areas and adding a wind-resistant outer layer often works better than relying on a loose thick layer that the air passes through.

Gusts matter on exposed routes

A sheltered street and an open bridge can feel like different forecasts. Gusts are especially relevant on hills, coastlines, large playing fields and routes between tall buildings.

Check the strongest gusts as well as the average wind. They affect balance, umbrella use and how secure loose clothing or equipment needs to be.

Moving activities add their own airflow

Cycling creates airflow even on a relatively calm day, increasing cooling at riding speed. Running creates more body heat, but an exposed headwind can still make the outward and return legs feel very different.

Match the layer to both effort and exposure. A breathable windproof can be more useful than a heavy insulated coat for active plans.

Choose layers that work in wind

Use close-fitting cuffs, adjustable hoods and outer layers that do not flap excessively. Secure hats, scarves and anything attached to a bag.

If rain is also forecast, a hooded waterproof is usually easier than an umbrella. Make sure the hood moves with your head and does not block your view.

Check the return conditions

Wind direction and strength can change through the day. A tailwind on the way out may become a headwind on the return, particularly for cycling and exposed walks.

Look at the later feels-like temperature and gusts before deciding which layer stays behind.
