What Does Feels-Like Temperature Mean?
Weather explained · 2026-07-12 · Wethra

Feels-like temperature estimates outdoor comfort. It is not a second thermometer reading, but it can be the more useful clothing clue.
Why it differs from the temperature
The measured air temperature describes one part of the weather. Feels-like temperature combines other conditions that affect how your body experiences being outside.
It is an estimate rather than a promise. Shelter, sunshine, clothing and personal comfort can still make two people experience the same number differently.
Wind makes cold feel colder
Moving air takes warmth away from exposed skin, which is why a breezy 8°C can feel less comfortable than a calm 8°C. The effect grows on open routes and at cycling speed.
A wind-resistant outer layer can help more than simply adding another thick jumper, especially when the wind cuts through loose or open fabric.
Humidity changes heat
In warm humid weather, sweat evaporates less easily and your body may feel hotter than the temperature suggests. Breathable, loose clothing and water become more important.
Dry heat can feel different even at the same reading. Direct sun and hard exercise still add heat, so the number needs context.
Sun, shade and movement matter
A sunny sheltered spot can feel noticeably warmer than a shaded street. Walking uphill or running adds body heat, while waiting at a bus stop does not.
Use feels-like temperature alongside the activity. It describes the conditions around you, not the amount of heat you will produce yourself.
Use it as a clothing clue
When the feels-like reading is several degrees lower than the air temperature, consider wind protection or an extra layer. When it is higher in humid weather, favour breathable clothing and reduce unnecessary layers.
Wethra uses feels-like temperature with rain, wind, timing and activity because no single number can make the whole outfit decision well.
