What to Pack for a UK Festival When Rain Is Forecast

Festival rain affects more than the outfit. It changes the ground, the queues, the temperature and the state of everything in your bag.

Choose footwear for the ground

A short shower can create mud that lasts for the rest of the weekend. Waterproof boots or wellies with comfortable socks are a safer choice than trainers when sustained rain is forecast.

Wear them before the site turns muddy rather than carrying them as a theoretical backup. Blister plasters and spare socks take little room and can rescue a long day.

Carry a proper waterproof

A lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho gives hands-free protection in crowds and queues. Check that it covers enough of your clothing and can cope with more than a brief shower.

Umbrellas are often impractical around busy stages and may be restricted. A hood that stays in place is the more useful festival feature.

Keep one set of clothes dry

Use dry bags, zipped pouches or sturdy plastic bags inside your main bag. Keep a complete change of clothes separate from anything already wet.

Protect your phone, charger, tickets and medication individually. A bag described as water-resistant may not enjoy several hours of rain as much as the label suggests.

Prepare for the evening temperature

Wet weather and standing around can feel cold after sunset, even when the afternoon was mild. Pack a warm layer that fits under the waterproof and remains dry until needed.

A hat can provide useful warmth without taking much space. If sun is also possible, keep sunscreen and water in the plan rather than treating rain as the only condition.

Plan the route back

The walk to a tent, car park, station or pickup point may happen late, in mud and with fewer lights than expected. Save enough battery for directions and keep a small light accessible.

Check the forecast for departure time. Packing for the main event but not the journey out is how dry clothes end up waiting somewhere else.
