What to Wear Dog Walking in Rain and Mud

The dog still needs a walk. The useful question is how to return with the rain and mud mostly on the washable things.
Start with practical footwear
Wet grass and muddy paths make grip more important than appearance. Choose water-resistant boots or shoes with a sole that suits the ground rather than hoping everyday trainers will negotiate politely.
For a short pavement walk, lighter footwear may be enough. For fields, parks and repeated puddles, ankle coverage and easy cleaning quickly become worthwhile.
Use a waterproof that leaves your hands free
A hooded waterproof keeps both hands available for the lead, bags and the sudden investigation of something in a hedge. It also works better than an umbrella when the wind picks up.
Choose enough length to protect your upper legs if steady rain is likely. Breathability matters on longer or faster walks, even when the dog appears to be stopping every six metres.
Plan for mud as well as rain
The sky can clear while the ground stays wet for hours. Dark, washable trousers or waterproof overtrousers are useful when the route includes long grass, muddy tracks or an enthusiastic shake nearby.
Keep a towel by the door or in the car. This is not a fashion recommendation, but it may save the rest of the day.
Stay visible on later walks
Evening rain makes roads and paths darker. Reflective details, a small light and visible dog gear can help around traffic, shared paths and poorly lit areas.
Check sunset and visibility as well as rain. A walk that starts in dull daylight may finish after dark.
Make the next walk easier
Dog walking is often repeated later the same day. Hang wet outer layers where they can dry, and keep a second pair of practical socks or gloves available in colder weather.
